Today I volunteered again for the meal prep shift from 2:00 to 4:00PM. I came in and signed in, and did the usual things before saying hello to everyone that was there. There were four kitchen staff members there today, and two volunteers were already there from the previous shift. Susan said she had a big job for me, she told me to put these prepackaged meals (Chinese chicken with rice and vegetables) onto these baking pans and to put them on a rack. She told me to put 9 on each sheet. One of the previous volunteers helped me open the bags with the meals in them until she had to leave at 2:30. Then I finished the whole rack filled with the meals and started a new one but this time only putting 6 meals on a baking pan. When I finished that, Susan gave me a crate with expired packaged food in it to throw away the food inside and recycle the packaging. Then she gave me a couple of donut boxes and told me to throw away the donuts and to flatten out the boxes. For the last hour, I put utensils in plastic bags and filled up a whole bin of them. I listened to my own music while doing this because there were no other volunteers to help me. I wish there was at least one other volunteer there that I could talk to while doing the work. Finally, I threw away my hairnet and gloves, put my apron away, washed my hands, and left. I said goodbye to Susan and she thanked me for the work I did that day. I hope there are more volunteers with me next week!
