Today I volunteered at the usual time for the last time for my senior project for the meal prep shift from 2:00-4:00PM. When I got there I did the usual things, and I saw two volunteers making bags while I got my apron on. When I finished washing my hands I went to the back to join them but they were finished, so one of the kitchen staff members brought us all to the pantry and told us to put a bunch of cans and goods in plastic bags for people to pick up. He showed us how many things we should put in each bag and how to tie them up. We all started to do this, putting two cans of tuna, cans of vegetables, soups, pasta, and instant ramen into each bag. One of the other volunteers started bringing the bags to the front to put in bins. At 2:25 she showed me where to put the bags because she needed to leave, but the other volunteer stayed till 4:00 with me. I started bringing the bags to the front by taking 4 at a time (they were a little heavy) while the other volunteer (Sophie) stayed to make some more bags. Then a staff member came into the pantry and told us we had made enough, so the other volunteer and I brought the rest of the bags to the front. I also brought more white bins to the front because there were only two there when I started putting the bags in them.
After we finished that, Susan told us to wrap and flatten out the cardboard boxes to recycle. She asked the pastor there to show us how to wrap the boxes in twine after he was finished eating. So we first flattened out all the boxes that were not flat yet while he was eating. Then the pastor grabbed a bunch of flat boxes and showed us the specific way to wrap them. With a long piece of twine, place the boxes on top lengthwise or short endwise, then make a small knot at the very end of one end of the twine and tie that around the other end of the twine around the cardboard. Then pull it tight, and wrap the long end around the cardboard as many times as it allows, then once it can't wrap another time around, tie it around an already wrapped part of the twine on the cardboard. It took me a couple times to get it, but I did and then I made about four cardboard bundles. Susan asked me to sweep up the kitchen and the back area for my last task while Sophie wiped down the tables and the fridge in the back room. She let us leave a little early because there wasn't anything else to do. So I said goodbye to all the staff members and left. Till tomorrow, one last time.
