Bowery Mission Volunteering Day #5 (5/5/21)

Today I volunteered for the meal prep shift from 2:00 to 4:00PM again but this time on a Wednesday. I finally found more available times for the rest of my project so I will be volunteering twice a week from now on. First I signed in and did all the usual things, washed my hands, put the red apron on, etc. I also said hello to chef Ron, Susan, and Sean was there again today. Sean gave me my first task which was putting uncooked bacon onto baking sheets to prep them to be cooked later on. It was only me and one other volunteer named Tess. We filled up 3 large sheets together with the bacon. Then I filled up a small bin with more sugar from the pantry, and she filled up the coffee bin. Next, I prepared 20 trays like last time with napkins and utensils so they were ready for people to use when eating there. Then I restoked the small utensils area where people get their utensils with more forks, knives, and spoons. After I was done with that, Sean said there wasn't much else to do other than sweep and Tess would mop. So I swept the entire kitchen area along with the walk-in fridge, and the serving area. While I was sweeping a few people dropped off a bunch of prepackaged and ready-to-go meals in the serving area. I notified Sean and we brought them into the kitchen and sorted them out into a large bin. For the remaining 45 minutes, I put utensils in plastic bags and put them in a bin like I have done many times before. Tess helped me and we talked about life while doing the bags. I really like when there's another person there to talk to while doing work, especially when we are doing work together. Before we left Sean asked us to put some water bottles into a cooler in the dining area so they would get cold. Then I said goodbye to everyone and they thanked me for volunteering like always. I feel like a regular when volunteering because I know everyone now. It truly is a great community and I feel great about the work I do there. I can't wait to go back tomorrow!
