Today I volunteered again from 2:00-4:00 PM for the meal prep shift at The Bowery Mission. When I got there I put my umbrella in one of the lockers for volunteers, put an apron on, washed my hands, then put gloves and a hairnet on. Chef Ron was there and he said hello to me, I also met another volunteer and she told me to get trays and put napkins and utensils on 20 trays to put out for later. Then I put more napkins and utensils into the proper bins for use later on. Then I saw Susan the staff member that I reported to for the last few times I volunteered. She directed me towards the back where another volunteer was wrapping bread and putting it in a separate bin. We split the stack of deli wrapping paper and continued to wrap the bread. We had to break some baguettes in half and cut some into smaller pieces because they were too big. While we were wrapping we had a great conversation about life, college, and we just got to know each other a little bit. I told her about my senior project and she said that it sounded very cool and interesting. After we filled up two bins with wrapped bread, we started putting utensils into plastic bags and putting them into a bin that was half full with bags already. We also continued to talk while doing this work. Then once there were no utensils left, we put the bins away and cleaned up the table we were set up at. Then we went into the kitchen and a staff member named Sean gave us jobs to cut onions and peppers. I cut and diced about 5 onions and put them onto a serving tray. (My eyes were watering a lot.) Once it reached 4:00 Sean said we were done and could leave, so I cleaned my station, washed my hands, and left. I'm looking forward to going back again next week and meeting more people!
